American Apparel has a logic problem. Seeking diversification, they have stepped away from their core product line of fashion oriented tees and entered into the heavyweight market with the Military Surplus t-shirt.  Every other t-shirt company has all but abandoned 7 once goods. They didn’t sell. I do believe however that they will cycle back into vogue.

So is American Apparel a visionary on this item? Maybe so, but custom t-shirts can bear only so much of a price burden. Ask any custom t-shirt printer and they will tell you that customers want one thing today – cheap custom t-shirts. I have no beef with the new Military Surplus t-shirt from American Apparel, in-fact, it’s a great shirt. My problem is that it is way too expensive. Our Gildan 6.1oz custom t-shirt can be purchased printed for less than the blank cost of American Apparel’s Military Surplus tee shirt. So my money says that Gildan will most likely enter the market with a seven ounce item at half that price. I will post that development in the future.
