There are many file types that our art department uses to create custom t-shirts, polo shirts, hats and more. To understand if you have the right file type for us to create the very best custom clothing for you as our customer, you need to know what we need to do our job.
There are two distinct types of files, vector based and pixel based files. Vector based files such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw are the most versatile files a customer can have. These files are scalable and provide great color separations for printing. Vector based files will have the extensions .ai, .cdr or .eps. These files are only vector based if they are created in a vector program. Vector based files may be converted into pixel based files for the purpose of printing digitally or for full color screen printing with no loss of fidelity. Pixel based files such as Photoshop, .gif, .jpeg, .tiff, or PNG are only applicable to four color process printing (full color), or for use as embroidery templates. Pixel based files have limited scalability. Customers often make the mistake of assuming that “placing” a pixel based file in a vector program will provide us with a vector image. A pixel based image can never be converted into a vector file by "placing" it in a vector application – it is physically impossible.
